The First Man: Meet Dd Contibutor Aaron Ingley

 In Archive, Uncategorized

I know, I know.  After years in the dance world we can all get a little sick of the preferential treatment men receive as the minority group, but yay!  I am so excited Dd is expanding to include Aaron Ingley into our former all female party.  Diversity, in all of its forms, is something we are about.  So, I present to you Aaron, Julia Erickson’s partner and the other half of the brains behind Barre. Enjoy!

ART: Performance or visual? What place does art have in your life?

Full tilt participation in the fine art of life is what gets me out of bed in the morning—aided by strong coffee of course. I am constantly fascinated and inspired by the many talented people that have come in and out of my life, and hold each of these relationships as a precious and unique individual work. I often refer to myself as performer above a dancer despite my nine years as a professional ballet dancer. I’ll take almost any opportunity to stand in front of a crowd. Indeed my experience as a ballet dancer often presented the opportunity to utilize my acting, and on rare occasion singing, skills. I am also a budding auteur having produced a number of documentary films on different aspects of ballet—check out my YouTube page( search aaroningley).

2. CRAFT: Knit or Crochet or Other? What is your craftiest project to date?

Crafty may be a stretch for me, but I am an avid gardener. I find great satisfaction in taking seed to fruit or flower. Gardening is a great exercise in patience and can be very (pun intended) grounding. My greatest success to date is growing a full size pumpkin in our tiny urban garden. I am also very proud of my wall of sunflowers. I also like playing video games. While I don’t advocate sitting indoors all day long, I think that there are a lot of gentlemen out there that will agree that getting absorbed in a great game is like reading a good book.

3. DESIGN: Classical or modern? What designer or architect inspires you the most?

Check out Julia’s profile, I’m with her on this one—Pittsburgh provides an excellent place to experience an intriguing mix of old and new architecture. I do love to explore old places though. When PBS airs anything about castles I am glued to the TV. I am fascinated by the secret passage way concept, and will live in a house with one before I die.

4. FOOD: Salty or sweet? Do you know how to make your favorite dish? (If so, please tell us in a blog!)

I carry a salt shaker around in my backpack (a little trick I learned from Julia). I love a rich and wonderful desert, yet I hate candy. I suppose you could say that I like complex multi-tiered flavors, and I’ll try anything once. Just don’t serve me up a mayonnaise sandwich—Yuck!

5. THOUGHT: Fiction or Nonfiction? What form does the bulk of your own reading and/or writing take?

I just graduated from college. You can send the congratulatory checks to the Barre address. For the past three years I read text books all day every day. By the time I got around to reading for pleasure I would get through one page then wake up with a book on my face. Boo! Now that I’m out of school I look forward to catching up on all of the classics that I missed over the years. First on the list: A Picture of Dorian Gray.

6. FUN: Where in the world do you want to go or be stranded? What five things would be in your bag?

Is it too indulgent to say that I want to be stranded in the penthouse suite of the Mandarin Oriental on Tierra del Fuego with a salt shaker, A Picture of Dorian Gray, my XBOX 360, a video camera… and I guess a Barre?

You can find Aaron on Youtube and Barre on FB and Twitter. Looking forward to the posts and videos!
