Introducing Dd Contributor: Amy Jacobus

 In Archives, Uncategorized

Welcome the latest addition to our Dd Family–Amy Jacobus! In keeping with tradition, Amy responds to our initiation questionnaire.

1.  ART:  Performance or visual?  What place does art have in your life?

Performance. Movement is essential to my mental health. Period. Dance and exercise keep me attuned to the present moment and prevent me from drowning in a sea of to-do lists.

2.  CRAFT:  Knit or Crochet or Other?  What is your craftiest project to date?

I wish to be crafty, but I often don’t take the time to tackle your typical crafty projects. My craft is choreography. Though I am building a new standing desk with a friend in the near future. I’m pretty excited about that. 🙂

3.  DESIGN:  Classical or modern?  What designer or architect inspires you the most?

Gah. I don’t feel qualified to answer this question. I wouldn’t consider myself a true fan of any one designer or architect, but I definitely have a soft spot for most things worn with age and use. I find older buildings – brownstones in Brooklyn, for example – charming because they’re not quite perfect. They’re lived in and that gives them character. I feel the same way about old books, ballparks, writing tables, libraries, cathedrals, baking dishes… The most beautiful thing in my apartment is my boyfriend’s phonograph. Also related: I secretly want everything to be haunted.

4.  FOOD:  Salty or sweet?  Do you know how to make your favorite dish? (If so, please tell us in a blog!)

Both. I’ve been known to quickly alternate from plates of nachos to ice cream sundaes to popcorn with lime… Of course, I also try to eat pretty healthfully. I don’t know how I survived without my green smoothies and greek yogurt with fresh blueberries. I’ll drop everything for a good cup of coffee in a cozy mug. I think cooking is a bore (hence the quick, no fuss smoothies and yogurt), but I love to bake. I’m currently in a layer cake phase.

5.  THOUGHT:  Fiction or Nonfiction?  What form does the bulk of your own reading and/or writing take?

The salty or sweet question for books gets the same answer – I like to switch it up. Nonfiction followed by fiction followed by nonfiction again… Agatha Christie mysteries are my go-to beach/vacation/fun books. I am growing my dance library so I can dip in and out of texts for research as well as enjoyment. And I like to geek out on marketing and design books, too. My writing is entirely nonfiction. That’s what happens when you have a journalism degree. I also love to read The New York Times, and I feel like I might be the only person my age who subscribes to home delivery. I wish I had time every morning to read the whole paper.

6.  FUN:  Where in the world do you want to go or be stranded?  What five things would be in your bag?

I haven’t traveled nearly as much as I’d like, but the last place I traveled and wouldn’t mind being stranded in was Sevilla, Spain. I’d need coffee money, sunglasses, a notebook, a can’t-put-it-down mystery novel and a hotel pen (so cheap, but they always write the best!).

Glad to have you on board! And if you are in a serious layer cake phase, I can’t recommend the Milk Bar cookbook more…cakes are totally nuts, unbelievably sweet and salty, completely time-consuming, but so fun to make!
