Meet New Dd Contributor, Emily Jordan!

I am so excited to introduce Emily Jordan.  She is an artist of many interests and skills and I can’t wait for her to take us on her journey of bookmaking.  Like all of our new contributors–and we have many more in the pipeline–Emily has been gracious enough to answer our Dd Survey………….

1.  ART:  Performance or visual?  What place does art have in your life?

I make visual art as well as performance art. Art is extremely important to me, making it whether it’s a painting, or dancing, it’s a form of satisfaction and accomplishment for me. Being an art student, I find myself spending all my free time in the painting studio. I love the high ceilings and large windows, it’s a space that inspires me to create.

2.  CRAFT:  Knit or Crochet or Other?  What is your craftiest project to date?

I tried to knit once, I’m terrible at it! I’m not that crafty of a person, although I wish I was. I have a friend who can knit and crochet beautiful things. I recently took a class about how to make a hand-produced book, which was incredibly tedious, detail oriented work. I definitely would consider papermaking, letterpress, and bookbinding art and not craft, at least in the way we tend to think of things as “crafty.” It was very cool to have a personal experience with my project, to hand set the type, carve linocut illustrations, struggling with setting up the press so everything would line up, mixing the ink, everything that goes into the process is so tactile. I used my hands in a way that I haven’t really before when making paintings. I now find myself examining the quality and texture of papers and ink all the time.

Also, I just started an internship at Anthropologie, my favorite clothing store. Everything is so beautiful and flowery in there, I would always go in there just to get inspired to make art. Every store’s decorations are one of a kind, and I’m working with the store artist helping make and install the window displays. It’s amazing and really fun! Is that considered a “crafty” project? 🙂

3.  DESIGN:  Classical or modern?  What designer or architect inspires you the most?

I love eclectic style. Anything that mix and matches patterns and textures that compliment each other and bright, warm colored walls. I couldn’t tell you a designer or architect off the top of my head that inspires me the most, but I know what I like!

4.  FOOD:  Salty or sweet?  Do you know how to make your favorite dish? (If so, please tell us in a blog!)

I love sweet things. My mom is fantastic at making the most beautiful cakes and cookies you’ve ever seen, and they taste amazing too. For savory foods I love anything that is light, fresh, colorful and full of flavor. If it’s heavy and brown and covered in gravy, I won’t touch it!

5.  THOUGHT:  Fiction or Nonfiction?  What form does the bulk of your own reading and/or writing take?

Lately I’ve been enjoying memoirs, so I guess that falls into the category of non fiction! Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of time for reading for pleasure, since I’m a college student I only seem to read my textbooks and write papers!

6.  FUN:  Where in the world do you want to go or be stranded?  What five things would be in your bag?

A typical response: anywhere were there is a white sand beach and blue ocean. Or, a city filled with museums to visit. That’s too hard to think of only 5 things that would be in my bag! But five things that I ALWAYS have in my bag are: hairclip, lip balm, iPod, planner, and granola bars.
