Bushwick Open Studios: Awesome Sound Installation and Collages You Won't Find on the Map
Bushwick Open Studios is this weekend. There is an overwhelming amount of ART happening and happenings, but I can recommend a couple things that I will definitely be attending:
1. Wappen Field by Michelle Jaffe
“Viewers are encouraged to step forward from behind and experience the helmet as if wearing it. …each helmet broadcasting different sounds. Ideas of the group experience dissolve and notions of anonymity, personal experience, protection and isolation are among those that emerge from the experience.” –Joseph Becherer, The Grand Rapids Press
Michelle took a sculptural crochet class of mine at Textile Arts Center and we have been in touch and talking art ever since. I was able to make a studio visit last month and preview Wappen Field. The layers of voice and sound were so captivating I stayed in the installation listening, unaware of time passing. The transporting and transforming comes not only from the sound but also from the “costume” the listener inhabits in order to hear. I am looking forward to experiencing it again with the lighting and other viewers.
This longtime dance photographer is showing his collages on Saturday and Sunday from 3p-7p. You might not find this on the official guide, so write these directions down:
Speaking of which, Hyperallergic has curated a nice, concise guide. In addition there is an iphone app to help you navigate the neighborhood and all the art it has to offer. I will be biking around all afternoon–hope to run into you!
