Throwback Thursday: Damian Woetzel & Wendy Whelan
Everyone loves Throwback Thursdays.
#tbt gives you an excuse to share that embarrassing photo of your big sister from Halloween 15 years ago — back when she had awful teeth and those ubiquitous large, wire frame glasses. (Thanks, Paige.)
And it gives us reason to sift through endless images of gorgeous performers from all points within our rich dance history. Let’s pay homage to our heroes of the stage through a new series of blog shorts every Thursday. First up? Damian Woetzel. We’ll tell you why:
“Impressive dancing and impressive dancers aren’t that difficult to recognize. Anyone with an interest and two good eyes can do so with no formal ballet-watching education.” – Robert Greskovic, Ballet 101

Robert Greskovic gives a shout out to a list of extraordinary performers in his ultimate guide to enjoying the ballet. Damian Woetzel is among them and for good reason. Here, our DIYdancer throwback to his performance of the pas de deux from Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Woetzel performed with ballet superstar Wendy Whelan at Vail International Dance Festival in 2007.

He is one of my favorite performers but I admire him even more for his collaboration with justice Professor Michael Sandel: http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/01/25/a-harvard-professor-and-a-dance-star-team-up-for-an-unusual-event/
Charismatic dancer turned heavyweight intellectual who is also the artistic director of Vail? Yes, he deserves to be on many more lists.
I REALLY need to make it out to the Vail International Dance Festival one summer soon…
We could make a Dd outing of it and you all could stay with me in Denver. : )
I love this! And I love when dancers make friends with philosophers.
