Ballet Academy East Announces New Boy's Scholarship Program

 In Archives, Uncategorized

Ballet Academy East, located in New York’sUpper East Side has been training dancers since 1979. Recently, they have announced the expansion of the merit scholarship program for boys for their Pre-Professional Ballet Division. Up until this year, the school has awarded boys ages 7-9 scholarships, but now, the age range has been raised, so boys ages 7-18 may audition to receive one of eight coveted full-year scholarships.

The expansion of the scholarship program has been in the works for about two years according to school director and founder Julia Dubno. “One of the wonderful things about our syllabus, designed by Associate Artistic Director, Darla Hoover, is that we train well rounded dancers who can adapt to any style without affectations. The ballet world needs guys, and by providing financial assistance, we will be able to continue developing the next generation and invite boys who may otherwise not have the resources to participate.” In addition to the boys scholarship program, financial aid scholarships are available for girls as well as boys. “Historically, we haven’t had to turn anyone away,” says Dubno.

BAE’s program has an extensive list of alumni who have gone on to have successful professional careers in ballet companies around the world ranging from the American Ballet Theatre to the Bavarian State Ballet. Dunbo adds, “one of the unique features of our program is that our faculty genuinely cares for each student. We feel that the kids do best in a nurturing environment free of sarcasm and negativity. It’s not always easy for young male dancers. We want them to feel special.”
