Check out Claire’s picks for 2/10-2/17!

1. Blue Room, by former Trisha Brown Dance Company Dancers Dai Jian and Elena Demyanenko, at New York Live Arts. $20 February 13, 14, and 15 at 7:30. Friday talkback after the performance with Jodi Melnick.

I’ve actually been looking forward to this for a while, based on my own experiences dancing and improvising with these two fantastic performers. They are both rigorous dancers in different ways, equally interested in precision and exploration. Their NYLA show puts them together, as individuals and as a pair, to explore their different experiences. Demyanenko hails from Russia and danced with TBDC and Stephen Petronio, as well as Martha Clarke and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, before performing her own work. Dai Jian is from China and danced with TBDC and Shen Wei, acting as his assistant at the Olympics, before teaching and choreographing on his own.

2. Benon, by Souleymane Badolo with Charmaine Warren, at Danspace Project. $20 February 13, 14, and 15 at 8:00.

Badolo, known for merging African and contemporary Western dance, returns to Dancespace Project with “Benon.” Since relocating to New York from Burkina Faso, Badolo has been nominated for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer (2011) and won the Juried Bessie Award (2012) for his work exploring different traditions in dance. The Juried Bessie award goes to a choreographer or dancer with the most “interesting and exciting ideas,” which makes him someone to follow.

3. Collaborations: Periapsis Music and DancePeriapsis Music and Dance in association with Kumble Theater at LIU Brooklyn, Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts. February 14 and 15 at 7:30. Tickets $12, $30, $35.
