1. Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet at BAM

Cedar Lake brings the best of its recent repertoire to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, with three different programs featuring dances by some of the most sought-after choreographers from  Europe and the United States. I’m most excited for the chance to see Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Orbo Novo,  which I’ve regretted missing since the company debuted it in 2009. Cherouaki’s work is performed all over the world–this weekend alone he’ll be in opera houses in both New York and Sydney, Australia–but he rarely comes to the US, so it’s worth checking out when he does. Other programs include dances by the company’s new associate choreographer Crystal Pite,  founder and choreographer of  Kidd Pivot, and  British choreographer Hofesh Schecter.

Program A:  Orbo Novo by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui: Wednesday June 11 and Friday June 13.

Program B: Violet Kid by Hofesh Shechter; Tuplet by Alexander Ekman; Necessity, Again by Jo Strømgren: Thursday June 12.

Program C: Grace Engine by Crystal Pite; Tuplet by Alexander Ekman; Necessity, Again by Jo Strømgren: Saturday June 14.

2. American Ballet Theater: Sascha Radetsky’s final season!

ABT performs Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella this week, followed by Giselle and Swan Lake. The season ends with Coppelia on July 3rd–but for ballet fans of a certain age, it’s also the end of an era. Soloist Sascha Radetsky, better known to swooning teenagers everywhere as Charlie from the ballet movie Center Stage, will be ending his career with ABT after 19 years with the company. After the season ends, he’s heading to the small screen, on the new ballet show Flesh and Bone, and he’ll continue to coach through the Antony Tudor Repertory Trust, but this is your last chance to catch him on stage. He’s originated numerous roles, surviving and thriving after double knee surgery, and his  presence will be missed even among the all-star roster at ABT.

3. ROVE Summer Festival: Close Encounters

The summer dance festival season kicks off with ROVE, formerly Rooftop Dance. Starting June 16th, ROVE puts up shop in the front window of the Roger Smith Hotel in Midtown. For two weeks, five different artists will take over the window for an 11 hour installation, and then return for a second installation the following week. Come any time of day, and stay however long you want! It’s a platform that pushes performers to stay with their ideas, but one that also allows you to experience those ideas on your own terms.
