1. Trajal Harrell: Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church

“What would have happened in 1963 if someone from the voguing ballroom scene in Harlem had come downtown to perform alongside the early postmoderns at Judson Church?”

Trajal Harrell has been exploring this question for the last five years in various forms in his Twenty Looks series, including its opposite, “What would have happened if one of the early postmoderns from Judson Church had gone uptown to perform in the voguing ballroom scene in Harlem?” (M2M version). Audiences and critics have fallen for it left and right, this one included: after a hiatus from shows after an injury, “Antigone Sr” reminded me what I was missing, and “M2M” was one of my favorite shows of the year. And it’s not just me–Claudia La Rocco wrote about her long term romance with the series in The New York Times back in 2012. For the first time ever, the Kitchen will present the entire series together, one show per night for an entire week. With phenomenal dancers, and a great sense of humor.
