{ Dd } Short Short List 10/25 – 11/1

This week we are recommending you go both inside and outside the black box of theater…

1. Ralph Lemon’s Scaffold Room at the Kitchen

The NY premiere of this installation by celebrated choreographer, director, and conceptual artist Ralph Lemon features a “lecture-performance-musical” component where Okwui Okpokwasili, April Matthis, and a video of 86-year-old Edna Carter, a rural Mississippi Delta resident, will investigate archetypal black female personae in American culture. While Lemon does not consider this a work of dance, we think dance lovers like you won’t want to miss out on this expanded format which includes a graphic reading series with dance luminaries such as Yvonne Rainer and Miguel Gutierrez.

Installation on view for FREE 10/20 – 12/5

Performances 11/3 – 11/10

What happens when ballet and flex dancing are combined? Led by dancer and artistic director Michele Wiles, the first week of BalletNext’s twelve show run will answer that question in a collaboration with Wiles and Jay Donn. Also featuring three premieres, by both Wiles and Brian Reeder, and live music, the latest iteration of this young company is worth checking out.
